On February 27, 1988, in Sumgait city, which is only thirty kilometers north of Baku, mobs made up largely of ethnic Azeris formed into groups that went on to attack and kill Armenians both on the streets and in their apartments; widespread looting and a general lack of concern from police officers allowed the situation to worsen. The violence in Sumgait was unprecedented in scope in the Soviet Union and received heavy coverage in the Western media. During three day period there where dozens injured and 53 killed, moreover, some victims were tortured and bodies were burned.
In February 29 Soviet Union army entered Sumgait, which, however, did almost nothing to defend the Armenian population. Azerbaijan had done its dirty work of monsters...
The Armenians' massacre in Sumgait was the first ethnic violence in the new history of Soviet Union and had grate deal both for collapse of Soviet Union and for the war burning in Karabakh.
As a result of both the camouflage of Sumgait genocide and not well informed international community, the government of Azerbaijan continued strong anti Armenian propaganda, which led to massacre in Baku in February, 1990, during which hundreds of peaceful Armenian residents went to the victim. As a result of the mass massacres, made by the government of Azerbaijan in 1988-1990, the whole Armenian community became an outcast: at least half a million people.
All the massacres were the answer to the peaceful demonstrations of people in Nagorno Karabakh, whoes claim was to carry out their constitutional right to self-determination.
We’d like to note, that in July 7, 1988 the European Community adopted the formula which adjudicated the massacre in Sumgait, in which, especially, is said:
“Taking into consideration the fact that autonomous region Nagorno Karabakh is a historical part of Armenia (80% of population are Armenians), as well as the fact that this region was unified to Azerbaijan by their arbitrary decision in 1923; as well as the massacre of Armenians in the Azerbaijan city of Sumgait, and also taking into consideration the fact that in a result of the deteriorative political situation in Azerbaijan took place mass massacre of Armenians in Sumgait and violence in Baku, which is the result of the fact, that it is dangerous for Armenians to live in Azerbaijan, the violence and repressions against Armenians in Azerbaijan is adjudicated.”
The government of Azerbaijan has neither adjudicated the massacre in Sumgait nor expressed regret in ethnical violence. Vice versa, Azerbaijan performs itself as a victim representing the coexistence of the people in Nagorno Karabakh as an “aggression”, grossly perverting the facts; meanwhile the criminals making massacre against Armenians are left unpunished till now.
